Situated just five miles from the Caribbean Sea, Belize City is the largest city in Belize. It offers the traveler the perfect blend of natural beauty and metropolitan sights and adventures. Home to the annual riot of color that is the Belize Carnival and filled with fascinating museums and galleries such as the Image Factory and the Maritime Museum, this is one of the Caribbean’s most vibrant places to visit. The Image Factory is an innovative art gallery, packed with examples of Belizean art and cultural artifacts. The Museum of Belize is also well worth a visit and it is conveniently located right opposite the wonderful Maritime Museum. It is housed in an old prison, which dates from the days when Belize formed part of British Honduras. This unique setting provides an evocative atmosphere for exploring the history and culture of the city, ranging from Maya artifacts dating back three millennia to items relating to the building’s history as a prison. Belize is home to several distinct ethnic groups, and this accredited national museum is the perfect place to come and celebrate this diversity.
As in most places, choosing the best time to visit Belize City depends on a number of factors: what you want to see, what sort of weather conditions you like best, and your budget. September is the best time to visit if you want to see the city in Carnival mode: the glorious floats, dances, musical bands, and singers are like nothing else on earth! And luckily, Carnival time falls outside of the most expensive time to visit Belize City, i.e. between October and April. These months are when the weather is at its most temperate, and so represent the peak season. In the heart of the summer though, between June and September, Belize City is a great place to come to experience some amazing heat and to cool off beside the sea of course.
Using public buses or hitchhiking are the cheapest options when it comes to getting around this city. There are also several tour buses taking you to all of the key sights (such as the City Zoo). For an unforgettable journey, explore the Caribbean cays by water taxi!
