Located in southern Oregon’s beautiful Rogue Valley, Medford is big enough to offer cultural events and plenty of historical attractions but small enough to be welcoming and easy to navigate.
For history buffs, the city offers a number of walking tours around what used to be an anarchic frontier town. Take the haunted brothels and opium dens tour to find out what life was like when the town was taking shape. Take a short trip to the Canyonville Settlement and see demonstrations of blacksmithing at nearby Hanley Farm.
The area around Medford is also blessed with outstandingly beautiful scenery. Visit Applegate Lake to swim, fish and enjoy water sports like water-skiing and jet skiing. Ride the miniature trains at the family-friendly Medford Railway Park or hike the scenic Natural Bridge Loop, before heading downtown for some hearty Oregon cooking.
The Rogue Valley is prime agricultural country, and Medford is famous across America for its succulent fruit. Try delicious juices, cakes and preserves at the many local markets, explore some high class seafood restaurants and sample the many local microbreweries.
Medford has an excellent bus network which stretches quite a distance into the countryside, and downtown is not large, making walking a great option. You don’t need to rent a car, but having your own transport will make accessing sites of natural beauty, lakes and ski slopes much easier. There are also several scenic bike paths, so renting a bike is an enticing idea.
The bus takes about 25 minutes to travel downtown from Rogue Valley International – Medford Airport (MFR) and is easily the cheapest ground transportation option. However, if you need to be dropped off at the doors of your hotel, dedicated shuttle buses may well be available, and taxis can be booked with ease. The major car rental firms are also present at the airport.
